Clone: Tefillat HaShelah: Blessing in the Merit of our Children
On the eve of Rosh Chodesh Sivan (the beginning of the new Hebrew month), there is a very special custom in which many Jews pray to HaKadosh Baruch Hu and ask Him for blessings, especially the upcoming generation.
For some, the prayer is for the success of existing children. For others, it is a request that they be granted to have their own children.
Either way, the desire is the same: to bring a new generation of upright persons into Klal Yisrael.
The prayer of Tefillah Shelah, also known as Tefillah Avot HaBenim, was propagated by renowned 17th century Halachic author, kabbalist and communal leader of Prague, Rav Yeshiyahu ben Avraham HaLevi Horowitz.
An excerpt from the prayer: “…I have come to ask and grant from You that my children and my descendants forever be pure and proper persons, and that no impurity or blemish may be found in me and in my children and in my descendants forever, but peace and truth and goodness and uprightness in the eyes of Hashem and in the eyes of man, and that they may be possessors of Torah, etc. And grant them health and honor and strength, and grant them stature and beauty and grace and kindness, and that there may be love, brotherhood and peace among them, and invite for them worthy spouses from the descendants of the Torah scholars….”
